We have many support agencies available to the school to assist the needs of children, where required.

BSLA (Better start literacy approach)

In 2023 the Kiwi team (Rooms 18, 19, 20, and 21) at Pukete School implemented an enhancement to our reading curriculum called the Better Start Literacy Approach, BSLA. This approach has been developed in New Zealand by a team of experienced researchers from the University of Canterbury, following years of research on the best ways to support children’s early reading, writing, and oral language success. This initiative is being rolled throughout many schools across NZ and has proven exciting outcomes for our tamariki.

ESOL (English as a Second Language)

At Pukete school we provide English language tuition for children who are learning English as they are from a non-English speaking background. The ESOL literacy programme helps individuals and/or groups to achieve competence in the English language.

Learning Support Team

Pip Crawshaw- Learning support coordinator (LSC)

Across the country schools have been employing learning support coordinators. This is a new role in schools to support the wide and diverse range of learning needs in our classrooms. In my role as LSC I will work alongside the senior management team, class teachers and learning assistants, family and whanau to ensure our children at Pukete school are well supported. My background is

Corneel Van Blerk - BSLA Tier 2

I have been teaching part time at Pukete for  17 years, doing Reading Recovery for the past 7 years. I absolutely love seeing my students grow in confidence as they become better readers and writers!

As an artist I have been involved with teaching art in the past, as well as some school murals, production backdrops and all things arty.

My husband, children and I love tramping, movies, jetski hangouts and bbq family nights  with our dog.

Nicola Baguley - BSLA Tier 2

I have been a classroom teacher for 20 years. This year I have been given the exciting opportunity to become a specialist teacher and also a Reading Recovery teacher.

I absolutely love it when children experience success and see them grow in confidence and become enthusiastic about learning.

When I am at home our family enjoy walking our over enthusiastic dogs, cooking and eating dinner out. We are also trying to make our own bread and pasta but unfortunately, without too much success at times.
